Quick Overview
I redesigned a popular Indian matrimonial app - Jeevansathi. Throughout the process, I conducted an initial analysis, discovered users' viewpoints, and made simple meaningful changes to the app.
Jeevansathi.com is a popular matrimonial site owned by Info Edge, used by millions of Indians to find their perfect life partner.

Before
-
Complicated communication between matches
-
Hard-to-use app functions
-
Visual noise
-
Untrustable app

Hard to understand functionality
Lack of proper navigation between screens
Cluttered match information

More cluttered match information makes it hard to find a partner

After
-
Smooth navigation between screens
-
Reduced visual noise to increase usability and efficiency
-
Less complicated messenger for effortless communication

Easy to use tabs that improve usability and efficiency
A navigation bar to easily navigate between screens
Addition of features that make communication interactive

More organized information architecture for effortless communications
Defining Problems
A complex registration process that frustrates the user
Lack of proper navigation between different screens
A messaging section that makes it hard to communicate
Visual design makes the profile look cluttered
Discovering User's Viewpoint

To validate my initial analysis and to further discover the user's needs, I created an online survey form. Based on the app, I curated the questions for the regular users of the app to know their wants and needs.
Questions like what do they least like about the app, what do they most like, how would they rate the app, and what they think about the functionality and features of the app.
Interacting With Humans
During the ideation phase of the project, I conducted an interview with a frequent user of the app for an in-depth understanding. I used a mix of open and close-ended questions which resulted in both qualitative and quantitative data.
WHAT PEOPLE SAID

Some profiles seem fake or used by robots!

I didn't; know there was a messenger in the app. I used WhatsApp to connect with the matches.

A lot of features are restricted in the standard package.
Building User Personas
To form a deeper understanding of the user's goals, needs, experiences, and behaviors, I gathered all the information from my user research, survey, and interview.
I synthesized two user personas - Aman and Aparna, to empathize with the users and get an idea of how the users feel while using this app.

Redefining Problems
The users of the app helped me recognize their pain points and what’s been bothering them about the app.
Majority of users feel they are not able to find a suitable match
Challenges in communication
Concerns about profiles being fake
Concerns about navigating the app
Focusing On...
01.
improving communication between the matches by redesigning the messenger
02.
creating a reliable and trustable app
03.
helping users find better matches
04.
Enhancing the navigation on the app
Low-Fidelity Designs
For the low-fidelity designs, I created different layout screens using pen and paper and then on Balsamiq. The messenger screen had an online carousel to help the user know who's online without scrolling down and also created separate tabs for chats and calls.
For the chat screen, I added video and audio calling features while modifying the layout. In addition to that, I also introduced an attachment button, camera, and voice notes features to share images and voice notes with the match.

Bringing The Designs To Life
Using Figma, I designed high-fidelity wireframes for the app's messenger, calling, and chatting pages.
Mindful of the dating and messaging app conventions, I modified the user interface of the app to improve usability.
Additionally, for easy navigation throughout the app, I designed a navigation bar that lets the users easily move between different screens.
Usability Testing
To understand the usability of the wireframes, I conducted usability tests to understand what works and what doesn't.
First, I asked a few questions from the participants and later on, gave them a few simple tasks to understand what they felt about the designs.
What worked
-
Most of the users found the addition of new features a benefit
-
The users were able to complete the tasks with 100% accuracy, within the expected time.
What didn't work
-
Few of the users felt that the icon on the navigation bar for messages could be misinterpreted as an email
-
The interests icon was less aesthetic and functional.
Final Designs
Redesigned navigation bar and messenger for effortless communication, reducing visual noise, and increasing usability and efficiency.

Learnings

During this entire process, my ability to empathize with the users has greatly increased. If I could do something differently, I would like to observe people use this app in real life to get a better understanding of how the users engage with the app.
I would also like to continue to improve and grow this app as I know the work of a Uxer is never done!
My journey taught me that an impactful yet simple design can change the whole experience for the user and I aim to keep evolving and improving such experiences for all mankind.
